The importance of changing your timing belt
A timing belt, also known as a cambelt, is crucial for your engine. This guide will cover what it is, how it works, what to do if it breaks, and when to replace it.
What is a timing belt?
A timing belt, also called a cambelt, is part of the internal combustion engine which keeps your engine’s camshaft and crankshaft in sync. This is vital to keep your vehicle running smoothly, as it ensures that the engine’s valves open and close at the correct times during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes.
What’s the difference between a timing belt and cambelt?
A timing belt and cambelt are the same thing, just two names for the same part. The word ‘timing’ relates to the belt that keeps the engine’s pistons in sync, while ‘cam’ comes from the connection between the crankshaft and camshaft.
What’s the difference between a timing belt and timing chain?
Timing belts and timing chains do the same job but are made from different materials. Timing belts are rubber reinforced with nylon or fibreglass, whereas timing chains are metal links.
You will usually find belts in newer cars, while chains are typically found in older or sportier models. Chains generally last longer because they’re tougher and get better lubrication.
When to change your cambelt? (how long it lasts)
There is no set rule of when to change your cambelt as it depends on the mileage, age and condition of the car. Every manufacturer will have different guidelines on this.
Typically, belts need replacing around 100,000 to 160,000 kilometres, but this can vary depending on the car make and model. If you own a Volkswagen or Audi, you should ideally change your timing belt every 5 years.
Signs that your timing belt might need checking
Sometimes, your cambelt might need replacing sooner than you’d think. Keep an eye out for these signs:
Ticking noises
You may start to hear ticking noises coming from the engine which is caused by the belt rubbing against other components. If this happens, turn your engine off immediately and call a mechanic as soon as possible.
Car not starting
Your car will not start at all if the timing belt has failed or is damaged.
How much does a cambelt cost?
The cost of a cambelt can differ based on the make and model of the car. The price will typically include both the parts and labour.
What happens if a cambelt breaks?
Driving with a damaged timing belt can cause detrimental (and expensive) issues if not recognised. Timing belts could snap whilst the vehicle is in motion, which could put yours and other road user’s safety at risk. This is an element which is often overlooked, as many are not aware of the importance of their timing belt, but it is a vital element in the running of your car and should be checked regularly.
