How can you prepare for your MOT test check

It can be a stressful time when your test finally comes back around, but with these simple steps, your car is more likely to pass:

  • Check that all of your lights are working, including fog and reverse lights.
  • Test your horn is working correctly.
  • Check your seat belts are in good working order and not fraying.
  • Make sure the doors, bonnet and boot all operate correctly.
  • Check your front washer and wipers are in good working order.
  • Make sure there are no warning lights on your dashboard.
  • Make sure the digits on your private number plate are correctly spaced.
  • Check the condition of your tyres, the legal requirement is 1.6mm and there must not be any bulges or cuts in the tread or side walls. It’s advisable to change at 3mm.
  • Make sure there is no knocking or rattling when you’re driving your car, this would indicate the suspension is possibly defective.
  • Check for cracks and stone chips in your windscreen, this will need to be rectified if any larger than 10mm in your line of sight. You can normally organise this with your insurance company or Auto Glass.

Can you drive your car without an MOT?

No, this is illegal and unsafe. There is also no grace period, so making sure you get it booked in before your current date is crucial. As well as this, your tax will also be void as you cannot tax your car without an up to date test certificate.

The only exceptions of this are:

– If you’re driving your car to an already booked in appointment

– If your car is over 40 years old, these cars do not require an MOT

How long will my MOT take?

We take pride in giving each of our customers the best service, ensuring your car is safe to drive. Our tests typically take between 45 minutes to an hour. If you don’t feel like waiting around, we are only a short walk from Bromley city centre, you can leave your car with us while you shop, or we can drop you off.

How can I find out the date of my next MOT?

You will receive a certificate stating the date each year your car passes, if this has been misplaced you can check on the GOV website, or simply give us a call.

How long is an MOT certificate normally valid?

An MOT is valid for 12 months. You can find the expiry date on your current pass certificate or visit the GOV.UK website to check your vehicle’s MOT history.

How much does an MOT cost?

Car MOTs are £54.85. They are a legal requirement and driving without a valid MOT certificate could result in a £1,000 fine.

How does an MOT test work?

An MOT test is an annual check that ensures your vehicle is roadworthy and safe to drive. The test ranges from checking the lights and seat belts to brake and fuel systems.

How long does an MOT take?

On average, it takes around 45-60 minutes, but if essential repairs are identified it could take longer. At Bromley Car Repairs, we always keep our customers up to date with their vehicle’s progress and if we identify any necessary repairs along the way.

What happens if I fail my MOT?

If your MOT fails you will receive a refusal of test certificate which explains the faults that need to be repaired, including major problems and advisories. You will then need to arrange a retest to gain a valid certificate.

What is the cost of an MOT retest?

We provide free retests within 10 working days of when your vehicle first failed.

What are your drop off times?

Our usual drop off times are between 8am-9am, but if you need to drop your car off before then we also have a secure drop off service.

How soon can I book?

We require at least one week’s notice to book your MOT. Please bear this in mind and make sure your certificate doesn’t expire before then.

What we check during your MOT

Our fully qualified, expert mechanics are well versed in carrying out MOT test checks and have years of experience. Here’s a summary of what we will check:

Brakes

Our brake checks are something that we take extra care with, making sure that your brakes are performing well, checking the condition and operation.

Seats & Seatbelts

Your seats will be checked during the test, making sure the seat belts are in good condition, not torn or frayed and the buckles are not damaged.

Doors

When we test the doors we inspect any door hinges and catches for deterioration that may impact the functionality of the doors.

Emissions

We will make sure that your exhaust is meeting the right guidelines which includes ensuring it is secure, complete and there are no leaks.

Body & Vehicle Structure

Your car goes through a lot over the years, which is why we check for the overall condition of your car to make sure there is no significant damage in certain areas..

Fuel System

We will check the fuel system on any vehicles with internal combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells.

Horn

Although you may not think of your horn, we include this in all of our tests, making sure it is in good working order.

Licence Number

Your vehicle registration number will be checked to make sure it is clearly visible on your vehicle.

Mirrors

We will check your mirrors for any damage to the casing, any cracks in the mirrors and that the mirrors can be moved and adjusted easily.

Steering and Suspension

We make sure that the steering and suspension are both in good condition, with all components working together and correctly.

Wheels and Tyres

During your car MOT and service, we will look for the overall condition of the tyre, the size and tread depth.

Windscreens

We will check for any damage that is in line with the driver’s vision, as well as the size of the chips.

Wipers

We will check that your washer fluid is being correctly dispensed and that the wipers are effectively clearing debris and dirt from your windshield.

I would highly recommend Bromley Car Repairs. They were friendly, helpful, reliable and reasonably priced. Won't go anywhere else.
